Ange Postecoglou has played down the significance of Tottenham potentially moving five points clear at the Premier League summit with victory at Crystal Palace on Friday AOE
Spurs returned to top spot on Monday with a 2-0 win at home to Fulham and play before Arsenal and Manchester City this weekend AOE
Postecoglou insisted his primary focus is on improving the team after he was critical of their second-half display against Fulham AOE
“It doesn’t really add any significance because whatever happens Friday night there’s still a full round of Premier League fixtures to be played and nothing of any real significance comes of that,” he said AOE
“We’re in a good space at the moment but again we’ve still got plenty of work to do to make sure what we do now is sustainable AOE

“It’s not about making a short-term impact, it’s about building something which hopefully brings sustained opportunities of success for the club AOE

There are areas where we are already very good, particularly around the defensive side of the game AOE

“I still think our main growth will come in the attacking side of the game AOE
I still think particularly in the front third, a lot of our movements are still not natural and fluent like we want them to be, which isn’t surprising AOE
“But what is getting us the goals is that we have great quality up there, which is contributing to that AOE
I still think the biggest growth for us will be in our attacking side of the game AOE
”Spurs will have to assess Destiny Udogie for the Selhurst Park clash after the left-back was withdrawn in the 56th minute of Monday’s win with muscle tightness AOE
Pape Sarr (illness) and Ben Davies (knock) are fit and Yves Bissouma is also available after he served a one-match ban for his recent red card at Luton, but Postecoglou was coy over his team after Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg impressed against Fulham AOE

First came the crack in Alexander Volkanovski‘s defence AOE

If the first crack was consequential, allowing Islam Makhachev to skim his shin off the Australian’s head, the latter was a consequence in itself – a consequence of one of the best fighters alive staying silent on his struggles with mental health AOE
That is, until now AOE
Volkanovski would have emerged from UFC 294 with credit anyway; he stepped in on 11 days’ notice and moved up in weight to challenge a man who had beaten him eight months prior AOE
Even in this surprising, first-round defeat by Makhachev, Volkanovski lost very little AOE
His featherweight title still rests firmly on his shoulder, and he will soon return to that weight class where he has been unbeatable AOE
But soon may be too soon AOE
In his post-fight press conference, Volkanovski began the dissection of this defeat – his second this year, but just his third as a professional mixed martial artist, with his first having occurred a long decade ago AOE
The 35-year-old started to dissect the technical reasons for this knockout loss, but it soon became apparent what was of greater importance: the psychological reasons for his presence in Abu Dhabi AOE

Clearly, the knock-on effect of those moments – as joyous as the former seemed to be – has led Volkanovski’s mental health to suffer AOE
Last week, all the talk was of how brave the Australian was to face Makhachev on short notice; braver was this admission that he is struggling, which simultaneously offers a different lens through which to view his choice to fight AOE
Keeping himself engaged and busy is healthy, but that is complicated by the inherent risk in his profession AOE
“Maybe it was just a silly decision under the circumstances,” he admitted AOE
Perhaps it was, though it was also understandable AOE
Volkanovski’s next challenge, however, will come outside of the ring AOE

He naturally sees the antidote to his current struggles as a quick turnaround to fight again, likely against the dangerous Ilia Topuria in January AOE
Yet, that fight could go the same way as Saturday’s against Makhachev, if the Australian does not first tackle these thoughts and feelings, and find the right balance for him AOE
We knew Alexander Volkanovski was brave AOE
That is even clearer now than it was last week AOE
Now, however, he must be sensible, and get to work outside the ring before he can return to work in it AOE
