The start of the new Formula E campaign came to a dramatic halt on Tuesday, as preseason testing was interrupted by a fire breaking out in a team garage - with the knock-on effect now spilling into a second day of track driving neube

Ahead of Season 10's opening race in Mexico City, teams and drivers are in Valencia, Spain gathering data and taking practice runs - or were, until the incident neube

Crews on the ground and around the pit lane where the fire broke out ran out from inside the garage with thick smoke immediately billowing out, before a mass evacuation was quickly ordered and fire crews attended the scene neube

One person was taken for precautionary medical attention and later released neube

Action was duly cancelled for the day while an investigation took place and the garages underwent a clean-up, but an updated Formula E statement has confirmed that preseason testing will again not be on the agenda for the entirety of Wednesday, with hopes to resume the following day neube

“In response to an incident on Tuesday at Formula E pre-season testing in Valencia when a fire caused damage to a garage in the pit lane, on-track testing activity will not go ahead on Wednesday,” the statement read neube

“Damage from the incident was contained following the activation of emergency procedures neube

One person was taken to hospital as a precaution but released without treatment neube

“An investigation into the cause of the incident is ongoing, but has already identified an issue which is being addressed neube

The investigation and further safety assessments will be completed and we aim to resume on-track activities from Thursday, subject to final confirmation neube

”Earlier on Tuesday, the initial statement from FE read: "In a break neube between practice sessions, a fire was detected in the pit lane and garage area which has been contained neube

“The on-track Incident Response Team acted immediately to contain the incident while the main pit building and garages were quickly evacuated neube

“One person has been assessed by medics and has been transported to hospital for precautionary checks neube

Formula E, the FIA and local fire authorities are investigating the cause neube

The FIA have advised Formula E and all teams that on-track activities have been cancelled for the rest of the day neube

This will allow for the area to return to safe working conditions neube

Further updates will be shared in due course neube

”Testing is due to run for the remainder of the week, with several new or returning drivers on the grid this year - including Nyck de Vries, who departed Formula One team AlphaTauri three months ago neube

Last season ended in triumph for British driver Jake Dennis, who became champion at a manic London E-Prix in July neube

Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc posted a hilarious joint Instagram on Monday in wake of their disqualification from the United States Grand Prix neube

The pair were punished after their Mercedes and Ferrari cars fell foul of rules governing the underside of F1 cars neube

Hamilton had finished on the podium in second, coming home two seconds shy of race winner Max Verstappen, while pole-sitter Leclerc finished sixth neube

As a result of their DSQ, Hamilton’s 18 points earned are wiped from his season’s total as are the eight points Leclerc earned, with both unlikely to appeal the decision neube

And following the ruling, the pair posted a joint photo on Instagram of both sat in a weekend press conference in Austin with glum expressions neube

The caption, meanwhile, simply read: “Mood neube

” Hamilton and Leclerc were investigated by the stewards following a plank wear inspection in Austin neube

Personnel from both Mercedes and Ferrari were summoned to see the stewards and, just after 7pm local time in Austin and more than three hours after the race finished, their disqualification from the race was confirmed neube

In a Mercedes press release, Hamilton stated he was simply “disappointed” with the penalty, while team boss Toto Wolff admitted “we got it wrong neube

”The FIA note reveals that the cars of Verstappen and Lando Norris (who now moves up to second from third in the final classification) were also inspected, but passed the checks neube

Breaches of technical checks of the car often result in disqualification, with a recent example being Hamilton from qualifying in Brazil in 2021 neube

Michael Schumacher was disqualified from the 1994 Belgian Grand Prix for an illegal floor, allowing Damon Hill to win the race neube

In a Mercedes press release, Wolff explained how Mercedes fell foul of the rules neube

“Turning to the race result and the disqualification, set-up choices on a sprint weekend are always a challenge with just one hour of free practice – and even more so at a bumpy circuit like COTA and running a new package,” he said neube

“In the end, all of that doesn’t matter; others got it right where we got it wrong and there’s no wiggle room in the rules neube

“We need to take it on the chin, do the learning, and come back stronger next weekend neube

”The ruling meant Williams driver Logan Sargeant earned his first F1 point in bizarre circumstances at his home race neube
