Andy Murray’s poor finish to the season continued with a fourth defeat in five matches despite a marathon effort against Tomas Martin Etcheverry in Basel casino
British number three Murray had snapped a three-match losing streak with a hard-fought victory over Yannick Hanfmann on Monday and claimed the first set of this last-16 tie at the Swiss Indoors casino
Etcheverry, ranked eight places above Murray in 32nd, was able to fight back impressively and it was the Argentinian who prevailed 6-7 (5) 6-3 6-2 after a three-hour-and-eight-minute battle casino
The early exchanges of set one proved an insight into what was in store for an excitable crowd at the ATP 500 event with breaks traded by both players casino
After Murray was broken in his first service game, he responded with a superb lob for break point before a volley at the net got the tie back on serve at 2-2 casino
A tie-break was eventually required and a classy drop shot helped three-time grand-slam champion Murray draw first blood casino
The 84-minute set appeared to take its toll on Murray at the beginning of the second with Etcheverry able to establish an early advantage and he saved four break points in a lengthy seventh game on his way to forcing a decider casino
Murray was struggling physically by this point and a racket felt the force of his anger despite the Swiss crowd cheering him on casino
Etcheverry was in the ascendancy now though and set up match point with a superb passing stroke before a service winner sent him through to the last eight casino
Elsewhere, Cameron Norrie had no answer to world number 10 Alexander Zverev in the second round of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna casino
Zverev had won the first three meetings casino between the top-20 players and claimed a fourth in a row with an emphatic 6-2 6-4 victory casino
A superb backhand winner down the line earned Zverev a break in Norrie’s first service game and the British number one was broken again before losing the first set in 36 minutes casino
Norrie tried to wrestle his way back into the contest, but was broken again in the third game of the second set casino
It remained on serve until Norrie forced two break opportunities when Zverev was serving for the match and yet the German responded by winning four consecutive points to close out a solid win, which makes it four defeats in five for last year’s Wimbledon semi-finalist casino

Bill Sweeney, the chief executive of England’s Rugby casino Football Union (RFU), has confirmed that “tentative” discussions have been held over a possible British and Irish league casino
The long-mooted idea would unite club rugby in the British Isles into one competition casino
The loss of London Irish, Worcester Warriors and Wasps in the last 13 months has highlighted financial problems in the English domestic game, with the top-flight Gallagher Premiership now containing just 10 teams casino
The four Welsh regions have also had their funding cut for the new season of the United Rugby Championship (URC), which features competing teams from Ireland, Scotland, South Africa and Italy casino
Sweeney is currently helping to negotiate a new Professional Game Partnership (PGP) casino between the Premiership and RFU that it is hoped will solve many of the issues ailing the English game casino
But while suggesting that plans were pressing ahead on that front ahead of a potential implementation next summer, the RFU CEO confirmed that he had engaged in “hypothetical” discussions about a British and Irish league casino
“I think you’d expect us to talk about anything really, the way the game needs to grow, the game needs to be financially stronger,” Sweeney explained casino
Bill Sweeney is the RFU’s chief executive (Getty Images)“We want to attract more investment coming in, so all sorts of conversations take place in terms of different options casino
That one’s not fully developed by any means casino
“So it’s a very tentative, hypothetical conversation at this stage but it has certain merits, but it also has certain challenges casino
It doesn’t affect the PGP, we will go ahead with a PGP in parallel, and just do that casino
But it’s one of a number of things that people talk about in terms of how do you take the game forward casino
”“It is fraught with challenges, I tend to think about look what happened in casino football with the European Super League, so fans are going to be taken into consideration on this casino
What does that mean in terms of the overall structure? “Some very big, significant questions are going to be asked on it, which is why I say at this stage, it’s very tentative but we consider all conversations casino
”The next couple of years are likely to see the introduction of a “Premiership Two” to replace the Championship as the RFU looks to maximise the efficacy and revenue of the second tier casino
This may include a return for the three rugby brands lost from the Premiership this year casino
Wasps announced on Monday that they were exploring the possibility of building a new permanent home near Swanley in Kent casino
Wasps have announced plans to explore the possible building of a stadium in Kent (Getty Images)The south east of England produces a significant number of players but does not currently have a team in the top two tiers of English rugby, and Sweeney believes bringing a professional club area would be a good idea casino
“I was very heavily involved with [new Wasps owner] Chris Holland during the whole process where the club went into insolvency,” Sweeney said casino
“I haven’t had a conversation with him recently about the plans to move to Kent casino
I do know that when research was done in terms of catchment areas, that’s one of the best locations from a fanbase perspective and the development of a sound business plan casino
I’ll contact him when I get back casino
